Is Your Life a Straight And Narrow Road?

There’s not a lot going on in this photograph, is there?  A paved, almost ruler-straight road, fields on either side, a partial glimpse of lake just beyond the trees, off to the upper right side of the photo that bleeds into a blue-tinged sky; a pastel of winter colors.

The road is a straight shot to nowhere.  Or to somewhere.

Metaphorically speaking, this is you life.  Or my life. Or anyone’s life.  It is, as Robert Frost remarked,  “The Road Less Traveled.”

Take a closer look and tell me what you don’t see.

See any Bright Shiny Objects to distract you … anything that might Take You Off Course?

The funny thing about distractions is that you never know when one of them will shimmer and glimmer in front of you:  those Bright Shiny Objects.

And, since they can appear in different shapes and sizes,  you almost never SEE them until they are smack in front of your face, fingers reaching and grasping, blocking your view.   Taking you away from your straight and narrow path.

If you let that happen.

Since our lives never unfold along a straight and narrow path – because there are always Bumps In The Road That Are Supposed To Be There – because we are always Making Choices about

What to have for dinner

What movie to go see

Who will be my best friend?

Which job will I take?

Where do I want to live?

What will I do today?

Should I marry him?  Marry her?

Have kids?

How many?

Move where? Do what?

Stand still or Take A Leap Of Faith?

These are just a few of the Bumps In The Road that will naturally force us to make choices.

That last Bump In The Road is the one that can REALLY distract you. Especially if you’ve already taken a Leap Of Faith that has changed your course away from the straight and narrow path you were traveling.

How do you know which Road Bumps are Bright Shiny Objects that will do nothing more than delay or prevent you from getting to where you want to go?

I can’t answer that question for you. But, I can answer it for me.  Here goes.

What I’ve learned to do is to follow my own energy. Does it “feel right?” Line up with my purpose? Somehow add to what I am already doing and not take away from that?

For me to get to this stage, I had to go through the Stage of Getting Distracted by Bright Shiny Objects.  Because that’s part of how life works. We don’t know until we try different things.

Allow ourselves to have lots of adventures.  So that we can get to the place where we Know What We Want.

And we don’t all get to the Knowing Place at the same time or in the same way.  Because that “place” is different for all of us.

Which means that you are in charge of creating your own road map.  So that you can Get There from wherever you are now.

And, sometimes, it’s a bumpy ride. Other times, it’s like being on a roller coaster: faster than a speeding bullet.

Until there comes a time when you get stuck in traffic.  Because one of those Bright Shiny Objects has smacked you in the face.

With all of us traveling down that road, how can we NOT bump into each other?   [gplus count=”true” size=”Medium” ]

Glad you like what I wrote., Lisa. Don’t get me wrong – Bright Shiny Objects serve their purpose and sometimes make for some really happy “interruptions!”
