Multiple Dogs: Back to Basics & Juggling Three.

Thomas Creek Wildlife Center 036

Back to dog basics.  Always a juggling act with three.  Thankful that two have leash manners and focus.  Two down and one to get ready.  That would be Tessa ... and me.  1.  Aromatherapy oils:  a calming spray.  Lavender oil massage.  Tiger Lily and Oregon Grape oils mixed into one blue bottle to be squirted down Tessa's throat daily. 2.  Outside on the sidewalk in front of my house: up to the corner and back.  Down the side street, in and out of driveways around empty garbage … [Read more...]

We Walked All Three Dogs. And What I Learned.

Tessa 5-10 064

We walked all three dogs on Saturday and my upper body still aches and I raised a blister on my pinky finger - on the  hand that held the leash.  But that was afterwards.  When we were back in our yard and I was about to take Tessa through the gate. Paradise is Another Day of Mild Weather And Dogs

This morning,  when I slipped out the back door with Tessa and Josephine,  to oversee their first bathroom break and to ground myself in my first gathering of zen energy,  I … [Read more...]

Re-Connecting to the Dog at the End of My Leash

Tessa 5-10 064

Rescue dogs come to their forever homes with invisible baggage dragging behind them.   When I was placing ex-racing greyhounds into pet homes years ago,  this was one of the on-going conversations I'd have with first-time dog owners.   As an example,  some greyhounds would cower if you raised your arm above their heads. One time, when I was up at the race track, pulling dogs from the adoption holding kennel,  I watched the guy in charge of this kennel, grab a long, wooden rod and bang … [Read more...]

Katz on Dogs – Book Review

get

I had just decided that I could survive without buying any more books for a while, making do with my numerous trips to the public library to satisfy my craving, when I checked out Katz on Dogs - A Commonsense Guide to Training and Living With Dogs, by Jon Katz. When I found myself renewing it for the third time, I knew I had a keeper. For those of us who are already well-versed in dogspeak,  reading this book will be like settling down in a comfortable chair with your feet up, knowing that … [Read more...]
